The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is providing emergency relief to the survivors of the earthquake that rocked Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on March 28.

ADRA International has pledged an initial $10,000 in disaster relief aid to those affected by the earthquake. This will be distributed in the form of non-food items such as tents and medical supplies.

The earthquake struck the western coast of Sumatra Island at 11:09 p.m. (local time) Monday and registered 8.7 on the Richter scale. As many as 2,000 people are feared to have died, many of them trapped under the rubble, according to Indonesian officials. A U.N. statement said some 500 were confirmed killed.

Several hundred people are reported to have died on the isolated Banyak island group just north of Nias. Simeulue island, also to the north of Nias, suffered widespread damage as well.

Donations to support ADRA’s response to the Indonesian earthquake can be made online at www.adra.org.

ADRA is present in more than 120 countries providing individual and community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age, or ethnicity.
