The Seventh-day Adventist administration of the countries of Britain and Ireland, known as the British Union Conference (BUC), voted a plan that is described as “more efficient and streamlined as well as giving a greater level of input for delegates and more information for members as a whole”. This took place at a special one day Extraordinary Session of the BUC on 17 May at Stanborough Park, Watford.
Over 320 delegates heard that the current system could be seen as a drain on finances that may be better spent on direct outreach activities [for example]. After much discussion, it was decided that the Recommendations (or Organising) Committee should meet 14 weeks before the Session, and the Nominating Committee to meet at least 12 weeks before the session. It was also voted that there be a delegation cap of 300; which would give a good representation of the membership, while keeping costs to a reasonable level.
Closing the meeting, BUC President Pastor Don McFarlane commented, "This is the Year of Evangelism. My heart is gladdened as I travel around the British Union and see our members and pastors involved in various forms of evangelism. When all is said and done the church is not about a session, that's merely a means to an end. The church is about delivering the Gospel of Jesus Christ."
