Renewable Energy: Biomass Feasibility Study for Chengdu, China

Zurich/Switzerland | 07.02.2013 | APD | ADRA

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency ADRA Switzerland will prepare a feasibility study for biomass power plants in Chengdu/China, together with Europe's leading biogas expert Dr. Arthur Wellinger, President of the "European Biogas Association", project manager Marcel Wagner, ADRA China and local authorities.

The planned study assesses the local situation and opportunities. It delivers both technical expertise and financial ratios for return on investment, which are important for interested investors. The study will be funded by the Interdepartmental Platform to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency (REPIC) which is supported by various federal departments (SECO, SDC, FOEN and BFE) of the Swiss government.

5,000 tons of waste is collected every day in Chengdu, a town with ten million inhabitants and capital of Sichuan province. Officials expect that the city will be surrounded completely by a ring of garbage in 2018. To reduce the contamination of soil and water but also to avoid using more and more agricultural land for landfills, they are interested to find recycling methods.

Biomass power plants have already been built in different provinces in China. In these existing biomass power plants the dry organic waste, such as trees, branches and leaves is burnt. The wet organic waste, such as kitchen, slaughterhouse, and restaurant waste remains untreated. These 60 percent of organic waste have according to ADRA a high potential to be processed into biogas and organic fertilizer.
