ADRA Assists Hurricane Survivors in the Ukraine

During the week of July 25 to July 29, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) began repairs on a schoolhouse for 127 kindergarteners in Mukachevo, Ukraine, whose school was badly damaged during a hurricane in late May.

ADRA chose to repair kindergarten No. 23 after being contacted by the Mukachevo city council and the mayor. “This kindergarten is one of the most important projects for the community and also relates well to ADRA’s disaster response possibilities,” said Andriy Chuprikov, country director for ADRA Ukraine.

ADRA will replace the roof that was torn off during the storm as well as repair windows and walls and also do bricklaying. The two-month project, valued at US$10,216, will be funded by ADRA International, ADRA Ukraine, and ADRA Euro-Asia.

The hurricane hit the Transcarpathian region of the Ukraine on May 18, damaging more than 700 homes. In Mukachevo, it tore roofs off of two kindergartens and the local public hospital. Official records claim that the hurricane reached winds between 55 to 78 miles per hour.

ADRA is present in 125 countries, providing community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age, or ethnicity.
