ADRA Brings Relief to Flood and Mudslide Survivors in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines | 09.06.2006 | APD | ADRA

In response to heavy rain that swept through the southeastern region of the Philippines in mid-May, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) provided food aid to families driven from their homes by massive flooding and mudslides.

Of the six southeastern regional provinces that flooded, Agusan del Norte in northern Mindanao was the most affected, with more than 20,000 families forced from their homes.

A massive mudslide in the province of Southern Leyte also buried the village of Ginsaugon Barangay. Nearly 150 residents were confirmed dead with 980 others missing, and presumed dead. More than 650 families were displaced by the disaster, and were unable to return to their homes.

ADRA was one of the first non-government organizations (NGOs) to respond to the disasters, providing food for more than 800 families combined in Agusan del Norte and Southern Leyte.

ADRA distributed 806 emergency food packs containing rice, milk, beans, raisins, sardines, peanuts, noodles, sugar, salt, soy sauce, and oil. Many families also received high-energy biscuits, utensils, plates, and bowls.

ADRA International, The ADRA Asia divisional office located in Thailand, and the ADRA office in the Philippines funded the project.

ADRA is present in 125 countries, providing community development and emergency management without regard to political or religious affiliation, age, or ethnicity.
